Inland Wetlands & Watercourses Department

The Inland Wetlands & Watercourses Department works to protect and preserve the Town’s inland wetlands and watercourses. These natural resources are vital to the provision of adequate surface and underground water, to hydrological stability and control of flooding and erosion, to recharging and purification of groundwater, and to the existence of many forms of animal, aquatic and plant life.

The Commission evaluates applications that may affect a designated wetland or watercourse and acts upon permit requests. This includes proposals for sheds, decks, most pool projects, and some landscaping.

All activities proposed within a wetland or watercourse or within one-hundred (100) feet of such watercourse require permits. These are enforced in accordance with the State of Connecticut’s Inland Wetlands and Watercourse Act, Sections 22a-36 through 22a-45, inclusive.
